Can Sculptures Be Displayed Outside? Judge for Yourself
The goose sculpture above was created in 2016 and stood proudly in my yard for 8 years. It was in a location that was protected from the west winds and bright sun but was not covered. The wood weathered to gray in many areas. Over the years, I twice lightly hand-sanded and applied additional polyeurethane finish. Some additional glue was added on the head in 2018. It was slowly delaminating where the neck attaches to the body. This photo was taken in March of 2021. Goose 02 (The second one that I created) disintegrated in May 2024. See My Listing.
The Heron above as created in February 2020 and has been outside since March 2020. It is completely exposed to the sun, rain and wind from all directions and is about 20 feet above Oyster Bay in Bremerton WA. This photo was taken in March of 2021.
In April 2024 it was knocked apart in a wind storm. It was taken down and closely examined. The legs had separated from the body. It had delaminated in two spots and the finish was in terrible shape. Algae was growing in on area. The bird was sanded down, and relaminated back into the original molds. A new finish was applied. It doesn't look too bad... for having spent four Western Washington winters in the weather. See My Listing. |
